The Astronomer Who Survived the Fire

Chapter 05 - The Astronomer Who Survived the Fire
Evelyn had buried an empty coffin.
The warehouse fire destroyed the observatory’s west wing, but Samuel’s body was never conclusively identified. Halcyon officials said the heat made recovery impossible.
Arthur Ward signed the identification paperwork.
Evelyn wanted to believe Samuel escaped.
Years passed without a message.
Hope became another form of pain, so she learned to call herself a widow.
Now Noah held proof that Samuel survived at least seventeen years.
The photograph showed Rachel meeting him outside a mountain research station in Colorado. A road sign behind them carried the name Cobalt Ridge.
Marcus searched scientific employment records.
A technician named Simon Hale had worked at Cobalt Ridge for twelve years. His photograph showed Samuel with gray hair and a scar near his temple.
Simon Hale disappeared one week after Rachel’s fatal crash.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Rachel never told me she found him.”
Noah’s anger rose.
“Why does everyone in this family hide everything?”
Evelyn had no answer that would not sound like another excuse.
They flew to Colorado with Detective Ortiz and Marcus.
Cobalt Ridge Observatory stood abandoned after funding ended. Snow covered its entrance. Inside, they found Samuel’s former workshop.
Star charts lined the walls.
A photograph of Evelyn sat beside the telescope.
Under it was a note:
I REMEMBER HER VOICE. I DO NOT REMEMBER HOW TO RETURN.
Medical records revealed that Samuel suffered severe head trauma and memory loss after the Halcyon fire. A truck driver found him miles from the academy without identification.
He rebuilt fragments of his life through astronomy.
Rachel discovered him using an old research code embedded in a public comet database.
She met him secretly because she believed the Wards monitored Evelyn.
A video file on Samuel’s computer showed Rachel speaking to the camera.
“Mom, if you see this, I found Dad. He remembers the stars before he remembers us.”
Rachel explained that Arthur Ward used the observatory fire to hide another crime: illegal experiments involving classified satellite tracking.
Samuel discovered Halcyon was selling orbital data to private weapons contractors.
The Aurelia Comet became a convenient distraction.
Rachel planned to expose the contracts.
Her car crashed before she could.
Noah turned away from the screen.
His mother had not died because she drove too fast.
She died because she continued the investigation her parents began.
A noise came from the observatory roof.

Someone was walking above them.
Then the power failed.
