A School Without a Family Name

Chapter 18 - A School Without a Family Name
The court finalized Halcyon’s governance transfer.
The Hart Scientific Trust became the Halcyon Commons, controlled by elected faculty, students, staff, alumni, and public representatives.
Evelyn and Samuel surrendered their automatic trustee seats.
Reporters asked why they gave up control after fighting so hard to recover it.
Samuel answered, “We fought for evidence, not a throne.”
Celeste appealed from prison.
The appeal failed.
Conrad died during his sentence, leaving a letter that blamed Arthur for everything. Investigators found enough contradictions to treat it as one final attempt at self-protection.
The academy removed the Ward family name from buildings.
Evelyn opposed replacing it with Hart.
Instead, the observatory became the Rachel Sky Observatory.
The physics building was named for Louise Bell, the nurse who preserved proof of Samuel’s incapacity.
The gymnasium kept no person’s name.
Noah designed a small plaque for the iron wheel:
TURNED BY MANY HANDS.
OPENED BY ONE QUESTION.
At the dedication, Sophie presented Evelyn with a new brass star map built by students.
It contained no hidden compartment.
“Are you sure?” Evelyn asked.
“We learned from your family,” Sophie replied. “We keep backups in public now.”
The crowd laughed.
Samuel and Evelyn finally held a private ceremony in the observatory.
They did not renew their old vows.
They wrote new ones.
No promise to avoid fear.
No promise never to leave.
Only a promise to tell the truth before deciding what the other person could bear.
Noah served as witness.
Marcus played music from a laptop because no one trusted him with live performance.
Afterward, they watched Aurelia through the restored telescope.
The comet was fading toward the outer system.
Its light had traveled years to reach them.

Evelyn thought truth often behaved the same way.
Late did not mean lost.
