The Man on Cobalt Ridge

Chapter 06 - The Man on Cobalt Ridge

Lena drew her weapon.

Marcus guided Evelyn and Noah behind a concrete support column as footsteps descended the metal staircase.

A tall man appeared carrying a lantern.

He had white hair, a scar near his temple, and Samuel Hart’s eyes.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

“Sam?”

The man stared at her.

He looked frightened rather than surprised.

“Rachel said you might come.”

Noah stepped forward.

“I’m her son.”

Samuel studied his face.

“You have her eyebrows.”

It was such an ordinary observation that Noah began to cry.

Samuel had regained many memories but lived under another name after Rachel’s death. She warned him that Halcyon’s contractors were still watching. When her car crashed, he believed returning would endanger Evelyn and Noah.

Evelyn’s relief became anger.

“You let me mourn you for twenty-five years.”

“I did not know who you were for eight.”

“And the next seventeen?”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

Samuel accepted the accusation.

He did not ask fear to become innocence.

He showed them the material Rachel had hidden at Cobalt Ridge: copies of satellite contracts, payment records, and recordings linking Arthur Ward, Conrad Ward, and several Halcyon trustees to the illegal data program.

Arthur had died ten years earlier.

Conrad continued the operation.

Celeste inherited it.

The academy’s student research competitions identified talented young programmers. Selected projects were quietly copied and sold to defense contractors through shell companies.

Sophie Chen, a sixteen-year-old student at the gala, had created the star-tracking software displayed when the observatory opened.

Celeste planned to steal it after the competition.

The hidden room activated because Sophie’s program detected the Aurelia signature and communicated with Samuel’s old telescope.

The antique star map supplied the physical key.

Noah’s unfinished telescope had supplied the final data link.

Three generations unknowingly completed Samuel’s emergency system.

A gunshot shattered the lantern.

Conrad Ward stood at the top of the stairs.

He had followed them from New York.

“You should have remained dead,” he told Samuel.

Before Conrad could fire again, Noah switched on the observatory’s roof motor.

The dome rotated.

A steel support arm knocked Conrad off balance. Lena reached him before he recovered and forced the weapon away.

Conrad was arrested.

In his coat pocket was the missing content from the third film canister.

A microfilm ledger.

Its final entry carried a name none of them expected.

MARCUS REED.
