The Signature Taken from a Hospital Bed

Chapter 08 - The Signature Taken from a Hospital Bed
The deed was notarized at Saint Matthew’s Neurological Clinic.
Samuel remembered waking there briefly after the fire. A man told him the papers authorized medical treatment.
The notary was Conrad Ward.
The doctor witnessing the signature was Arthur Ward.
The judge allowed the deed to remain provisionally valid until fraud could be proven.
Celeste regained temporary control of the observatory.
She ordered the hidden room sealed.
By evening, workers surrounded it with steel barriers.
Evelyn watched from the gymnasium doorway.
The academy was hiding the truth in the same wall again.
Noah refused to leave.
He sat beside his unfinished telescope and studied the star map. One brass ring carried dates. Another showed coordinates. When aligned to the night Samuel signed the deed, a small compartment opened.
Inside was a hospital identification tag.
SIMON HALE — UNKNOWN MALE.
Samuel had hidden proof of his false identity within the map years later.
On the back, a nurse had written:
PATIENT NOT COMPETENT TO SIGN.
The nurse’s name was Louise Bell.
Lena found her living in Arizona.
Louise gave a recorded statement.
Arthur and Conrad arrived at the clinic carrying legal documents. Samuel could not state the year, recognize family photographs, or understand property ownership.
Louise objected.
Conrad threatened her nursing license.
She wrote the warning on the tag and slipped it into Samuel’s coat. Years later, Samuel built it into the star map after recovering partial memories.
The deed became vulnerable.
Celeste responded by announcing that Halcyon would demolish the hidden observatory due to structural hazards.
Demolition was scheduled for dawn.
A preservation order could not be issued until Louise’s affidavit reached the court.
A storm grounded her flight.
The academy prepared machinery overnight.
Noah noticed the monitor inside the sealed room still transmitting a faint signal. Sophie Chen helped him decode it.
Samuel’s telescope was running an automated sequence.
The sequence would complete at 4:17 a.m.
“What happens then?” Sophie asked.
Samuel looked at the star map.
“Aurelia returns to the same coordinate where Evelyn first calculated its orbit.”
The comet’s return had never been publicly predicted.
If the telescope recorded it, Evelyn’s original calculations would be proven with a timestamp no one could fabricate.
Celeste knew.

The observatory was not being demolished because it was unsafe.
It was being destroyed before 4:17.
