The Nursery Door

Chapter 01 - The Nursery Door
Sofia Morales had not planned to become brave.
At twenty-four, she had built her life around careful survival. Arrive early. Speak softly. Work clean. Never give rich people a reason to remember your face unless they needed something spotless. The Caldwell penthouse paid more than any job she had ever held, and every dollar mattered because her younger brother’s community college bill sat on the kitchen counter back home like a second rent.
But the nursery door changed everything.
It happened three nights before the kitchen confrontation.
Sofia had been folding tiny white blankets in the laundry alcove when she heard Caroline Caldwell’s voice from the nursery hallway. Caroline was not the child’s mother. Everyone knew that, though no one said it in front of her. She was Harrison Caldwell’s new fiancée, thirty-five, beautiful, polished, and dangerous in the way silk can hide a blade.
Inside the nursery, little Emma Caldwell had been crying.
Not loud. Not spoiled. Scared.
Caroline’s voice came through the door, low and sharp.
“You will stop asking for her. Your mother is gone. Your father has a new life now.”
Sofia froze with a folded blanket in her hands.
Emma sobbed, “I want Daddy.”
Caroline answered, “Daddy is tired of weak little girls.”
Something inside Sofia moved before fear could stop it.
She opened the door.
Caroline spun around. Emma stood near the crib rail, clutching a stuffed rabbit, face wet and frightened. Caroline’s hand was not raised, but her posture was too close, too cornering.
Sofia entered and placed herself between Caroline and the child.
“She needs rest,” Sofia said.
Caroline stared at her. “Excuse me?”
Sofia’s knees shook beneath her black maid dress, but she did not move aside.
“Mr. Caldwell asked that Miss Emma not be upset before bed.”
It was only half true.
But rich people respected the name of the person who paid them.
May you like
Caroline smiled slowly.
That was when Sofia understood there would be consequences.
