Emma In The Hallway

Chapter 08 - Emma In The Hallway
Emma appeared in the nursery hallway holding a stuffed rabbit by one ear.
No one had called her. No one wanted her in the kitchen. But children know when adults are deciding the shape of their world without them.
She was five, small in a pale sweater, dark hair loose around her face. Her eyes went first to Sofia at the sink. Then to Caroline. Then to Harrison.
“Daddy?” she whispered.
Harrison turned.
Every hard line in his face broke.
He crossed the kitchen, crouched at the hallway entrance, and opened his arms only halfway, letting Emma choose the distance. She ran into him.
He closed his eyes as he held her.
Caroline’s face went pale.
This was the scene she had tried to prevent: father and daughter touching truth without her translation.
Emma looked over Harrison’s shoulder at Sofia.
“Don’t make her leave,” she said.
Harrison’s grip tightened around his daughter, but his voice stayed gentle. “I won’t.”
Caroline tried to step forward. “Emma, sweetheart—”
Emma shrank into Harrison’s chest.
That tiny movement destroyed Caroline’s last defense.
Harrison felt it. The flinch. The fear. The body of his child answering questions no adult had asked clearly enough.
He stood, lifting Emma carefully onto his hip.
Then he looked at Sofia.
“You are safe in this house tonight,” he said.
Sofia’s face crumpled.
Caroline let out a sharp breath. “Harrison, think about what you’re doing.”
He turned toward her.
“For the first time in months,” he said, “I am.”
The wine glass trembled again in Caroline’s hand.
The nursery hallway behind Harrison remained visible.
Not a hidden corner.

Not a rumor.
A witness.
