Step Away From Her

Chapter 05 - Step Away From Her
Harrison crossed behind the marble island with controlled steps.
He did not run. He wanted to. Every instinct in him wanted to tear the space between Caroline and Sofia apart, to shout, to demand answers, to gather every failure into one violent moment. But Sofia was shaking. The kitchen was full of sharp edges, glass, water, fear. His anger had to become safe before it became useful.
“Step away from her,” he said. “Now.”
Caroline blinked as if language itself had betrayed her.
“Harrison, you’re home early.”
“Yes.”
“This is not what it looks like.”
He looked at Sofia’s cheek.
Then at the wet towel crushed in her hand.
Then at the wine glass in Caroline’s fingers.
“It looked clear from the hallway.”
Caroline’s mouth tightened. She glanced toward Sofia with hatred disguised as insult.
“She has been interfering with household discipline.”
Sofia lowered her eyes. “Sir—”
Harrison turned slightly, but his voice softened only for her. “Sofia, don’t explain yet.”
That nearly broke her.
Not because he was kind. Because he did not ask her to defend herself before he believed his own eyes.
Caroline lifted her chin. “She has manipulated Emma. The child refuses to listen unless Sofia is present.”
Harrison’s jaw moved once.
“My daughter is five.”
“She is spoiled.”
“She is grieving.”
Caroline’s face hardened. “And this girl encourages it.”
Sofia flinched at this girl.
Harrison saw that too.
He stepped fully between them. His body blocked Caroline from Sofia, but he did not touch either woman. His anger was visible only in the tightness of his shoulders and the stillness of his eyes.
From the nursery hallway came a tiny sound.
A floorboard.
Then silence.
Harrison looked toward it.
Caroline’s fear sharpened.
Sofia saw the truth land inside him before he spoke.
May you like
The nursery door was not past.
It was evidence waiting down the hall.
