The Brother

Chapter 10 - The Brother

Sofia’s brother, Mateo, knew nothing about the penthouse.

That was intentional.

Sofia did not bring home stories about marble islands, chandeliers, or women who insulted her with a wine glass in hand. She told Mateo the job was good. Stable. Worth the long train ride. He was nineteen, studying nursing at community college, and already working weekends at a grocery store to feel less guilty about her help.

Caroline had found out about him through payroll documents.

“You should be careful,” she told Sofia two weeks earlier, while selecting flowers for a dinner party. “Scholarship recommendations can disappear. Employers talk. Families with legal status concerns should avoid conflict.”

Sofia had felt the words enter her like cold water.

Her family’s status was legal, but people like Caroline did not need facts to create fear. They only needed access to systems and the confidence to threaten them.

Sofia said nothing then.

Now, in the kitchen, Emma had spoken the truth by accident.

Harrison looked at Caroline. “You threatened her family?”

Caroline’s voice sharpened. “I reminded her of consequences.”

“For protecting my child.”

“For overstepping!”

The word echoed against marble.

Harrison lowered Emma gently to the floor beside Mrs. Alvarez, who took the child’s hand.

Then he faced Caroline fully.

“You threatened a young woman’s family, slapped her in my kitchen, frightened my daughter, and used the nursery door as punishment.”

Caroline’s eyes flashed. “You make it sound monstrous.”

“No,” Harrison said. “I make it sound accurate.”

Sofia’s breath shook.

For months, Caroline had made her doubt the size of every harm.

Hearing the truth spoken plainly felt almost painful.

Like a bone being reset.
