Caroline’s Version

Chapter 12 - Caroline’s Version

Caroline’s version arrived quickly.

Sofia was insubordinate.

Emma was emotionally manipulative.

Harrison was overwhelmed by guilt.

The staff disliked Caroline because she imposed standards.

The slap was not a slap, only “a corrective touch.”

The nursery door had not been locked, only “closed for quiet.”

Each sentence made Harrison feel colder.

He had heard versions like this in boardrooms. People who abused power rarely said, I abused power. They said standards, protection, structure, difficult decisions. They buried cruelty in language polished enough to pass inspection.

Caroline stood in the living room now, no glass in hand, no smile left. Security waited near the hallway. Mrs. Bell sat with Emma in the adjoining room. Sofia remained by the doorway, still in her black maid dress and white apron, cheek faintly marked, wet hands finally dry.

Harrison listened until Caroline finished.

Then he asked one question.

“Why did Emma flinch when you spoke?”

Caroline’s eyes narrowed. “She is sensitive.”

“Why did Sofia stand between you and the nursery door?”

“She is dramatic.”

“Why did you threaten Mateo?”

“I never threatened him.”

“Emma heard you.”

“She’s five.”

“Yes,” Harrison said. “And still more honest than anyone trying to survive your version.”

Caroline went silent.

There was no graceful exit from that.

Harrison turned to security. “Ms. Vale is leaving the residence today. She will not return without written permission from my attorney and a child welfare advocate present.”

Caroline’s face emptied.

“You’re ending our engagement over a maid?”

Harrison looked toward Emma’s room.

“No,” he said. “Over my daughter.”
