Behind The Door

Chapter 07 - Behind The Door

Emma Caldwell had not been locked in the nursery for long.

That was what Caroline would later insist, as if duration could rescue intention.

Five minutes, maybe seven. Long enough for a child to cry herself breathless. Long enough for Sofia to hear. Long enough for fear to become memory.

The door had a soft interior latch installed after Lydia died, because Emma began sleepwalking during grief-heavy nights. Harrison had approved it to keep his daughter safe. Caroline had learned how to use safety as a cage.

Sofia told the story in pieces at the kitchen sink.

Caroline said Emma needed to stop asking for her mother.

Emma cried.

Caroline closed the nursery door.

Emma screamed for her father.

Sofia opened it.

Harrison listened without moving.

The city outside the tall windows looked impossibly clean.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked.

Sofia’s lips trembled. “I tried to leave a note with Mrs. Bell. I didn’t know if my messages reached you.”

Caroline said quickly, “Because she knew she was exaggerating.”

Harrison did not look at her. “Quiet.”

One word.

Caroline stopped.

Sofia continued, voice shaking. “Miss Emma begged me not to go. She said if I left, Ms. Vale would send away everyone who remembered her mother.”

The sentence struck Harrison harder than any accusation.

Everyone who remembered her mother.

He saw, suddenly, what Caroline had been doing. Not replacing Lydia all at once. Erasing her by removing witnesses. The nanny. The old housekeeper. The tutor’s hours reduced. Sofia next.

His home had become a place where his daughter’s grief was being managed out of sight.

He had mistaken order for healing.

He had mistaken Caroline for help.

Harrison reached past Sofia and turned off the running water.

The sudden quiet felt like a decision.
