Water At The Sink

Chapter 04 - Water At The Sink

The white plate never broke.

Sofia would remember that later.

She remembered because everything else in the kitchen felt shattered: the wet heat in her cheek, the taste of fear, the chrome sink shining under soft daylight, the sound of water running over the untouched plate in her trembling hands.

Caroline stood beside her with a crystal wine glass, black strapless dress flawless, diamond earrings catching light.

“You still think you belong here?” Caroline asked.

Sofia’s eyes burned, but she did not release the plate.

Her instinct was to apologize. Years of work had trained that reflex into her bones. Apologize when someone else spills. Apologize when rich people are embarrassed. Apologize when anger needs somewhere to land.

But Emma’s face appeared in her mind.

Emma behind the nursery door, clutching her stuffed rabbit, whispering, Don’t let her send you away.

So Sofia gripped the sink edge.

“I was only protecting the nursery.”

Caroline smiled. “From me?”

Sofia said nothing.

That silence angered Caroline more than any insult could have.

Behind them, in the far main hallway entrance, Harrison stopped.

He had seen the slap. Not heard about it. Not interpreted it through Caroline’s smooth voice. Seen it.

His suitcase remained outside the kitchen threshold where he had dropped it. The hallway framed him clearly: tall, dark suit, slightly messy hair from travel, face first stunned, then hardening.

Sofia saw him in the reflection of the window.

Her throat closed.

Caroline did not see him yet.

She leaned closer to Sofia, glass still in hand. “You are the help. The help does not decide what happens in my house.”

Harrison stepped into the kitchen.

“It isn’t your house,” he said.

Caroline turned.

The crystal glass trembled once in her hand.

The water kept running.

The white plate stayed in the sink.

And for the first time since she arrived in the penthouse, Caroline looked afraid of being heard.
