She’s Just The Help

Chapter 06 - She’s Just The Help

Caroline made the mistake of saying what she believed.

“She’s just the help.”

The sentence hung over the marble island like smoke.

Water continued running into the sink. The white plate remained under Sofia’s wet hands. The towel hung twisted between her fingers. The crystal glass stayed in Caroline’s hand, amber liquid catching the city light.

Harrison turned back slowly.

“Say that again,” he said.

Caroline hesitated.

Good. She knew enough to fear repetition.

But pride pushed her forward.

“She is staff,” Caroline said. “You are allowing staff to confuse your daughter.”

Harrison stepped closer, one finger lifting near Caroline’s face but never touching her. The gesture was controlled, precise, and more frightening than shouting.

“She saved my daughter.”

Caroline’s eyes widened.

Sofia looked up sharply.

Harrison had not known.

Not fully.

But Mrs. Bell’s message, the hallway, the slap, Caroline’s panic at the nursery mention—all of it had connected.

Caroline forced a laugh. “Saved her from what? A bedtime rule?”

Harrison’s eyes did not move from hers.

“From the woman behind that door.”

The kitchen went silent except for water.

Caroline’s glass trembled. For one terrifying second, Sofia thought she might drop it. She did not. The glass stayed in her hand, as if even the object understood it was not allowed to make the scene more dramatic.

Sofia whispered, “Sir…”

Harrison’s voice softened. “Did she lock the nursery door?”

Caroline snapped, “Do not answer that.”

The command revealed more than the answer would have.

Harrison looked at Sofia.

This time, she did not lower her eyes.

“Yes,” she whispered. “From the inside. With Miss Emma crying.”

Harrison’s face changed.

Calm remained.

Mercy did not.
