The Night Before the Defense

Chapter 01 - The Night Before the Defense
At 10:43 p.m., less than twelve hours before Nora Hale was scheduled to defend her doctoral dissertation, her husband forced her to the bedroom floor.
Daniel Whitmore held both of her shoulders against the gray rug while his mother stood above them with a pair of silver hairdressing scissors.
Nora wore soft green pajamas. Her dissertation slides were open on the laptop beside the bed. Printed chapters filled a blue binder on the desk. She had been rehearsing the final section when Margaret Whitmore entered without knocking.
“Cancel the defense,” Margaret said.
Nora thought she had misheard.
“My committee is meeting at nine.”
“Then send an email.”
“The thesis has already been submitted.”
Margaret smiled.
“Submitted work can still be withdrawn.”
Daniel closed the laptop.
“Nora, this has gone too far. Remove the chapter about Whitmore Medical and finish next semester.”
“That chapter contains the clinical audit.”
“It contains accusations against my family.”
“It contains data.”
Margaret picked up the scissors.
“Women who respect their marriages do not build careers by publicly humiliating their husbands.”
Nora stood.
Daniel caught her arm.
She tried to pull away.
He forced her down.
Margaret gathered Nora’s long brown hair in one hand.
Nora screamed as the first section fell across the carpet.
“Women do not belong at universities,” Margaret said. “They belong beside the men whose names protect them.”
The scissors closed again.
Daniel looked away but did not release his wife.
When Margaret finished, Nora’s hair hung unevenly around her jaw. Dark strands covered the rug like evidence no one intended to preserve.
Margaret took the thesis binder.
Daniel took Nora’s university badge and phone.
“We will tell the committee you had a breakdown,” he said.
They left her on the floor and locked the bedroom door from the outside.
Neither noticed that Nora’s laptop had reopened.

The rehearsal program was still recording.
A green cloud-sync symbol blinked in the corner of the screen.
