The Vote Behind the Closed Door

Chapter 09 - The Vote Behind the Closed Door

After four hours, the committee asked Nora to leave while members deliberated.

She waited in a quiet office with Lena.

Her hands began shaking only after the door closed.

“What if they think I turned the defense into revenge?” Nora asked.

“They will evaluate the dissertation.”

“What if the evidence contaminates the science?”

“Then they will say so.”

Nora stared at the carpet.

She had spent years imagining this moment as a clean intellectual judgment. Instead, she had arrived after a night of coercion, missing half her hair, with investigators outside.

Lena handed her water.

“Whatever the vote, the recording is still evidence and the research record still exists.”

Forty minutes later, Professor Cole opened the door.

The committee had approved the dissertation with minor revisions.

Nora had earned the doctorate.

The committee also issued two independent referrals:

One to the university research-integrity office concerning Elaine Hale’s authorship.

One to the hospital safety consortium concerning Whitmore Medical’s clinical data.

Nora did not cheer.

She closed her eyes and cried.

The degree did not repair the night.

It confirmed that the night had failed to erase the work.
