The Hidden Watermark

Chapter 08 - The Hidden Watermark

Margaret claimed Elaine’s notebooks were fabricated.

Nora expected the accusation.

Elaine had embedded a mathematical watermark inside her equations—a harmless sequence of constants derived from Nora’s childhood birth date and the coordinates of a lighthouse near their home.

The pattern appeared in the handwritten notebooks.

It appeared in the earliest Whitmore source code.

It did not appear in later public papers after Margaret changed the notation.

A retired technician, Rosa Alvarez, joined by secure video.

She had worked in the laboratory when Elaine developed the method.

“I watched Dr. Hale write those equations,” Rosa said. “After her death, Professor Whitmore ordered us to remove her name from the project because she had not completed the degree.”

Margaret’s attorney objected.

This was not a trial.

Professor Cole allowed the statement only as context for the academic record.

Nora returned to the science.

The watermark did not independently prove ownership.

Combined with dated notebooks, code history, correspondence, and laboratory logs, it made coincidence implausible.

Margaret had built a company around the assumption that unfinished women could be removed from completed history.

Nora’s defense restored the sequence.
