The Question Her Adviser Asked

Chapter 03 - The Question Her Adviser Asked
Lena did not tell Nora to be brave.
She did not praise her determination or ask her to think about the university’s reputation.
She knelt several feet away.
“Do you want medical care first?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want the defense postponed?”
Nora looked toward the laptop.
“No.”
“That answer can change at any time.”
“I know.”
A physician documented the soreness in Nora’s shoulders and small abrasions near her scalp. The injuries were not life-threatening, but the circumstances required investigation.
Police collected the scissors, loose hair, door-lock logs, and laptop recording.
Daniel and Margaret were found at Whitmore House, where they were preparing an email announcing Nora’s medical leave.
Daniel insisted the haircut had been voluntary.
The video preserved Nora screaming no.
Margaret claimed she was helping an unstable woman correct a damaged hairstyle.
The timeline showed the scissors in her handbag before she entered the room.
Campus counsel offered Nora a private hotel suite and security escort.
At 4:30 a.m., Lena helped her wash the remaining hair and arrange it into a short, uneven bob.
Nora looked at herself in the mirror.
The person staring back did not resemble the polished doctoral candidate in her university photograph.
Lena stood beside her.
“You do not owe the committee a performance of being unharmed.”
Nora touched the rough edge near her ear.
“My dissertation argues that edited records can become weapons.”

“Yes.”
“I think I finally understand the conclusion.”
