Nora met Daniel at a medical innovation conference four years earlier.
He knew her research area.
He knew her mother’s name.
He claimed that connection was coincidence.
The recovered messages told another story.
Margaret had sent Daniel a photograph before their first meeting.
ELAINE HALE’S DAUGHTER. SHE MAY HAVE THE MISSING NOTEBOOKS.
Daniel replied:
What do you want me to do?
Margaret answered:
Stay close. Learn what she knows. If the work is harmless, no damage is done.
Daniel’s interest became genuine over time.
That did not make its beginning innocent.
He encouraged Nora’s doctorate while her work remained theoretical. He celebrated her early papers and attended conferences.
When she found the Hale notebooks, his support changed.
He asked to store them in the family safe.
He suggested delaying publication.
He insisted she remove Whitmore Medical from the dissertation.
Nora interpreted the pressure as fear for his family’s reputation.
She did not understand that monitoring her research had been part of the marriage from its first conversation.
