Daniel’s First Explanation

Chapter 10 - Daniel’s First Explanation
Daniel requested a supervised conversation.
Nora agreed only with Lena and counsel present.
“I never wanted her to cut your hair,” he said.
“You held me down.”
“My mother said you would destroy everything.”
“You believed her.”
“I believed the company could collapse.”
“You believed my body was an acceptable place to solve that problem.”
Daniel looked down.
He described years of pressure from Margaret.
She controlled his promotions, inheritance, and relationship with his father. She taught him that family survival required obedience.
Nora listened.
The explanation had emotional truth.
It did not transfer responsibility.
“When did you learn she wanted you to meet me because of the notebooks?” Nora asked.
“Before the conference.”
“And you still married me.”
“I loved you.”
“You also reported my research to her.”
“Yes.”
Daniel began crying.
Nora felt grief, not victory.
The man she loved had been both a husband and an observer assigned to remain close.

She ended the conversation after twenty minutes.
