The Order to Kneel

Chapter 01 - The Order to Kneel
The slap was not the loudest sound in the room.
The loudest sound came afterward, when two hundred people decided not to react.
Evelyn Cross stood beneath the recessed lights of Meridian Tower’s forty-eighth-floor ballroom, one hand resting against the faint red mark near her jaw. Her white silk blouse remained perfectly buttoned. Diamond earrings caught the city light. Behind her, executives, investors, and political donors watched with the disciplined stillness of people who had built careers by recognizing which truth was currently inconvenient.
Daniel Cross lowered his hand.
He wore a black tuxedo and the confident expression that had sold billions of dollars’ worth of promises. At his shoulder stood Bianca Vale, Meridian Group’s glamorous communications director, wearing a silver-and-black evening dress and a smile she was not quick enough to hide.
Daniel lifted a folder from the cocktail table.
“My wife has spent three years undermining this company,” he announced. “Tonight she attempted to block the largest acquisition in Meridian history.”
Evelyn looked at the folder.
It contained forged transfers, invented emails, and a resignation letter bearing a signature that almost resembled hers.
Almost.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Apologize to Bianca for accusing her of theft.”
Bianca tilted her head with practiced sadness.
Evelyn said nothing.
Daniel pointed toward the glossy black floor.
“Kneel.”
Several guests looked away.
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“Kneel, apologize, and sign the separation agreement. Then leave before I have security remove you.”
Evelyn finally met his eyes.
“You are ordering me out of this building?”
“My building.”
A small smile touched her lips.
Daniel mistook it for shock.
He turned toward the audience.
“After tonight, Evelyn will have no role in Meridian Group, no access to company property, and no claim on the life I built.”
The elevator doors opened behind the crowd.
A silver-haired woman in a perfectly tailored black suit stepped into the ballroom carrying a slim leather case. Margaret Sloan had served as general counsel to Hawthorne Trust for thirty-two years and had never once attended a Meridian party.
Daniel’s face changed when he saw her.
Margaret crossed the room without hurrying.
Evelyn lowered her hand from her cheek.
Daniel recovered first.
“Mrs. Sloan, this is a private event.”
Margaret placed the leather case on the table beside his forged documents.
“No,” she said. “It is a repossession.”
The ballroom became silent again.
This time, the silence belonged to Daniel.
Margaret opened the case.
“Daniel Cross, your authority to occupy Meridian Tower, use the Meridian trademarks, access the reserve accounts, and operate the company’s licensed technology was terminated seven minutes ago.”
Daniel laughed.
“That is impossible.”
Margaret looked at Evelyn.
“Mrs. Cross, shall I proceed?”
May you like
Evelyn’s expression became calm.
“Take back everything he believes he owns.”
