The Divorce Without a Throne

Chapter 15 - The Divorce Without a Throne
The divorce settlement was remarkably small.
Daniel kept his motorcycle, personal clothing, family photographs, and a portion of stock remaining after restitution.
Evelyn kept her trust.
There was no empire to divide because the empire had never belonged to the marriage.
Daniel requested the repaired coffee cup.
Evelyn declined.
It was the only item they disputed.
The judge asked why it mattered.
Daniel said it represented the company they built.
Evelyn answered that it represented the work they once shared before Daniel decided shared work required a single owner.
The judge refused to assign emotional custody over a cup.
Evelyn kept it because it had been hers before the marriage.
After the decree, Daniel asked to speak privately.
She refused privacy but agreed to a short conversation with attorneys nearby.
“I am sorry I hit you,” he said.
She believed him.
“I am sorry I ordered you to kneel.”
She believed that too.
“I was angry and terrified.”
“I know.”
“Will you forgive me?”
Evelyn considered the word.
“Forgiveness may happen inside me one day. It will not restore access to my life.”
Daniel nodded.

He had spent years treating access as evidence of ownership.
The final boundary taught the lesson too late.
