The Marriage Ledger

Chapter 07 - The Marriage Ledger

Hawthorne’s forensic team had examined Daniel’s spending for six weeks.

Evelyn authorized the review after discovering an invoice for a villa she had never visited. The property was leased through a shell company controlled by Bianca.

Daniel described the payments as merger-development expenses.

The ledger described another life.

Luxury travel.

Jewelry.

A private chef.

Rent for Bianca’s apartment.

A fertility clinic consultation.

Evelyn paused at the final item.

Bianca saw it.

For the first time, her expression contained something resembling shame.

Daniel spoke quickly.

“It was a general consultation.”

Bianca looked at him.

“You said she knew you wanted children.”

Evelyn answered before Daniel could.

“He told me he did not.”

Silence returned.

Years earlier, Evelyn had survived a pregnancy loss. Daniel held her in the hospital and said their marriage did not require a child to be complete.

Later, when she suggested trying again, he said the company needed stability first.

He had allowed her to believe the hesitation belonged to grief and timing.

With Bianca, he had planned a future.

The discovery did not make Evelyn jealous.

It made the architecture of the betrayal clearer.

Daniel wanted a wife who challenged him when Meridian was small.

Once the company became powerful, he wanted admiration without resistance and intimacy without history.

Bianca offered a version of himself reflected back without correction.

Until she became inconvenient.

Margaret presented another line in the ledger.

Daniel used Meridian funds to purchase an emerald necklace for Bianca.

The receipt had been coded as “employee cybersecurity retention.”

A board member removed his glasses.

Bianca touched her throat.

She was wearing the necklace.

The room noticed together.

Bianca unclasped it and placed it beside the corporate card.

Daniel watched her.

“You do not have to perform guilt for them.”

She looked at him.

“You just blamed the separation agreement on me.”

The alliance began to fracture.

Evelyn felt no triumph.

People who built trust around shared dishonesty often discovered it vanished when honesty became strategically useful.
