The Trial of the Founder

Chapter 14 - The Trial of the Founder

Daniel faced charges for wire fraud, attempted asset diversion, conspiracy, falsification of records, and assault.

Bianca and Renn cooperated.

Calder executives denied directing personal misconduct but could not explain emails outlining the plan to compel Evelyn’s signature.

The prosecution began with ballroom footage.

The slap itself appeared briefly.

More damaging was what came afterward.

Daniel ordering Evelyn to kneel.

Daniel calling Meridian Tower his building.

Daniel claiming she had no right to the life he built.

Then Margaret entered.

The video captured the moment certainty became fear.

Bianca testified about the forged archive.

Renn described the separation agreement.

Bankers explained the personal guarantees.

Miriam Chen testified about the blocked reserve transfer and the risk to customer funds.

Evelyn testified last.

Daniel’s attorney focused on the hidden trust.

“You allowed Mr. Cross to believe Arthur Sloan controlled Hawthorne.”

“Yes.”

“You concealed assets during marriage.”

“No. The trust was disclosed in our prenuptial agreement and annual financial statements. I concealed that I was the beneficial owner.”

“Why?”

“Fear and poor judgment.”

The attorney expected defensiveness.

Evelyn offered responsibility.

“Could that deception have made your husband feel powerless?”

“Yes.”

“Could it have driven his decisions?”

“No. Feelings influence choices. They do not sign forged transfers.”

The jury convicted Daniel on every financial count and misdemeanor assault.

Calder executives later faced separate proceedings.

Renn lost his license.

Bianca received a reduced sentence and financial penalties after cooperation.

Daniel received twelve years and an order of restitution.

The judge rejected his argument that losing the company was punishment enough.

Loss of control was not a criminal sentence.

It was the end of something he had never fully owned.
