Bianca’s Letter

Chapter 17 - Bianca’s Letter

Bianca wrote Evelyn from federal prison.

The letter contained no request for friendship or forgiveness.

She explained that Calder recruited her after her father lost his pension during a Meridian-backed bank failure. She entered the company believing Daniel and Evelyn were wealthy predators whose marriage was another business arrangement.

Daniel encouraged that belief.

He described Evelyn as cold, controlling, and incapable of love.

Bianca wanted the story to be true because it made the affair feel like rescue.

Then she met Evelyn.

“You were not what he said,” Bianca wrote. “I decided that meant you were better at pretending, not that he was lying.”

The sentence stayed with Evelyn.

People often protected preferred conclusions by reinterpreting every contradiction.

Bianca apologized for smiling after the slap.

“I thought another woman’s humiliation meant I had won. I did not understand that anyone who needs an audience for cruelty will eventually need a new person on the floor.”

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

Months later, she sent one page.

Tell the complete truth in every proceeding. Do not make redemption another performance.

Bianca did.

That was the only relationship they built.
