Margaret’s Retirement

Chapter 18 - Margaret’s Retirement
Margaret Sloan retired at seventy-one.
At her final Hawthorne meeting, she returned the black leather case from the ballroom to Evelyn.
Inside were the trust certificate, Daniel’s surrendered corporate card, and the emerald necklace Bianca had worn.
The necklace had been forfeited during restitution.
Evelyn sold it.
The money funded a program for spouses facing financial coercion in family-controlled companies.
Margaret asked what Evelyn planned to do with Hawthorne.
“For the first time, I do not want it to be a secret.”
They restructured the trust into a transparent investment foundation with independent directors. Evelyn remained beneficiary but surrendered unilateral commercial control.
Margaret raised an eyebrow.
“You spent years protecting power. Now you are giving it limits.”
“I learned from watching someone else believe access was ownership.”
Margaret smiled.
Arthur would have approved.
Then she corrected herself.
“Arthur would have argued for two hours and approved.”

Evelyn laughed.
Grief became lighter when memory allowed humor.
