The Separation Agreement

Chapter 06 - The Separation Agreement

Daniel’s separation agreement contained thirty-eight pages.

Evelyn read all of them.

He expected her to leave Meridian immediately, waive claims against him, remain silent about Bianca, and transfer “all direct or indirect interests associated with the marriage.”

The phrase was broad enough to reach the trust if she signed carelessly.

A second clause declared that Evelyn had voluntarily misused company information and accepted responsibility for merger losses.

A third required private arbitration before a lawyer selected by Daniel.

Margaret examined the pages.

“This is not a separation proposal. It is a confession prepared for her signature.”

Daniel’s attorney, Charles Renn, stood near the rear wall pretending to receive an urgent phone call.

Margaret called his name.

He stopped.

“Did you draft this?”

Renn answered carefully.

“My office prepared language based on instructions from the client.”

“Which client?”

Daniel looked at him.

Renn looked at Bianca.

That hesitation mattered.

Margaret displayed the document’s authorship log.

Bianca created the first draft.

Renn’s office revised it.

Daniel approved the final version.

The plan had begun four months earlier.

Evelyn remembered those months differently.

Daniel brought flowers after late meetings.

He suggested they take a vacation once the acquisition closed.

He told her they needed a fresh start.

At the same time, he was preparing to remove her from the company and force her to accept guilt for his theft.

Affection and strategy had occupied the same rooms.

The realization hurt more than the slap.

Physical pain announced itself honestly.

Manipulation borrowed the voice of hope.

Margaret asked whether Evelyn wanted the agreement preserved for civil proceedings.

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

“You are really going to destroy our marriage over a business disagreement?”

May you like

Evelyn touched the mark near her jaw.

“No. I am acknowledging what you already destroyed.”
