The Merger Inside the Affair

Chapter 08 - The Merger Inside the Affair

Bianca had not fallen in love with Daniel by accident.

Before joining Meridian, she worked for Calder North, the private equity group seeking to acquire the company’s payment network.

Calder placed her inside Meridian under a consulting arrangement.

Her task was to identify internal resistance, influence Daniel, and create a path to acquire the technology below market value.

Daniel believed he recruited Bianca.

Calder had selected him.

The merger agreement transferred Meridian’s operating business to a new entity while leaving most liabilities behind. Daniel would receive a five-year executive contract. Bianca would become chief brand officer.

Calder would gain access to Hawthorne’s technology.

Except Daniel did not own the technology.

Bianca knew that.

An internal Calder email recovered by Margaret’s team contained one sentence:

CROSS STILL BELIEVES HAWTHORNE IS PASSIVE. DO NOT CORRECT HIM UNTIL LICENSE ASSIGNMENT.

Bianca stared at the screen.

“You accessed privileged communications.”

“Hawthorne was copied on the licensing request,” Margaret said.

Daniel turned on Bianca.

“You knew.”

“I knew the license required consent.”

“You said Evelyn’s signature could be compelled through the divorce.”

“Your lawyer said that.”

Renn attempted to leave.

Security stopped him.

Evelyn understood the full design.

Bianca encouraged Daniel’s affair, fed his resentment, helped fabricate evidence against Evelyn, and promised the merger would make him independent.

Calder expected Daniel to force Evelyn’s signature.

Afterward, it planned to remove him as well.

The powerful husband who ordered his wife to kneel had been another disposable instrument.

Evelyn could have enjoyed the irony.

Instead, she saw the same pattern repeating.

Daniel treated her as a resource.

Bianca treated Daniel as access.

Calder treated Bianca as plausible deniability.
