The Railing That Sent the Signal

Chapter 02 - The Railing That Sent the Signal

Ashcroft House had been renovated after Eleanor suffered a fall five years earlier.

Every exterior railing contained impact sensors. The security system could distinguish ordinary pressure from a sudden body-weight event. If a registered family member crossed the barrier unexpectedly, the house transmitted an emergency alert to local dispatch and preserved the previous hour of surveillance footage.

Tyler knew about the cameras.

He believed he had disabled them that morning.

He had disconnected the visible system in the study.

He did not know the railing archive operated independently through the Sterling Trust.

Paramedics found Ava breathing but unconscious. She had a fractured wrist, a pelvic fracture, several cracked ribs, and a serious concussion. The stone patio had been partially covered by party rugs and flower boxes, which reduced the impact enough to save her life.

Officers secured Tyler on the balcony.

He insisted Ava had stepped backward while arguing.

The footage showed otherwise.

One camera captured his hands striking her shoulders.

Another showed Ava trying to reach the door.

A third recorded Tyler carrying a transfer agreement onto the deck.

The most damaging camera was not aimed at the balcony.

It faced the study.

At 10:14 that morning, Tyler entered with a laptop and attempted to erase the security archive. Beside him stood the family’s longtime attorney, Martin Keller.

Keller pointed toward a printed page.

“If she dies before the thirtieth day, survivorship returns everything to you.”

Tyler asked, “And the camera problem?”

“I will handle the house system.”

He did not.

Eleanor had already removed Keller’s access.
