The Apartment Behind the Story

Chapter 02 - The Apartment Behind the Story
The river apartment occupied the top floor of Rowan House, a restored stone building overlooking the city.
Clara’s mother, Elise Rowan, purchased it before Clara was born. After Elise died, the apartment passed into a protected trust for Clara.
Beatrice had demanded it repeatedly.
First, she called it a practical family asset.
Then she said the empty space insulted people who needed housing.
Finally, she claimed the apartment had always been intended for the Vale family.
Three days before the dinner, Clara received a notice that contractors had requested permission to remove the apartment’s fireplace wall.
She authorized no renovation.
When she entered the apartment, the large landscape painting above the fireplace hung crooked. Behind it, a brass panel had been forced open and resealed.
Clara remembered something Elise told her when she was a child.
“If anyone insists this home belongs to them, look behind the river.”
The painting showed the river.
Behind the wall was a fireproof box containing the black flash drive, old ledgers, hospital records, and a handwritten index.
Elise had not hidden jewelry.
She had hidden the history of Vale Holdings.
The first folder was titled:
FOUNDING — ORIGINAL OWNERSHIP.
The second:
BEATRICE — ALTERED RECORDS.
The third:
DAMIAN — BIRTH AND BENEFICIARY STATUS.

Clara opened only enough to understand that the demand for the apartment had never been about where Beatrice wanted to live.
The apartment was the last location where the original records survived.
