The Wall Behind the Painting

Chapter 02 - The Wall Behind the Painting
Amelia discovered the flash drive two days earlier.
She had gone to the river apartment after receiving a notice that someone requested replacement ownership documents. The request listed Margaret as authorized family representative.
Amelia had authorized no one.
Inside the apartment, the large painting above the fireplace hung slightly crooked. Behind it, a narrow panel had been opened and poorly resealed.
Amelia remembered her mother tapping that wall during childhood.
“If anyone ever insists this home belongs to them,” Evelyn Grant once said, “the wall remembers who paid.”
Amelia thought it was one of her mother’s strange jokes.
It was an instruction.
Behind the panel sat a fireproof envelope, the silver drive, and a brass key.
The drive contained scanned deeds, trust ledgers, audio files, and correspondence between Evelyn and Margaret dating back twenty-eight years.
Amelia had reviewed only part of it before dinner.
What she saw was enough to refuse.
Margaret had worked as Evelyn’s financial assistant before Nathan was born. She helped administer several Grant properties and knew exactly how the apartment trust was structured.
She also knew Amelia could not transfer the apartment without triggering a full audit of every company that had borrowed against Grant assets.
Vale Meridian was one of those companies.

The demand for the apartment was not about housing.
It was about preventing the audit.
