The Man at the Window

Chapter 03 - The Man at the Window
Charles Grant had arrived at Vale House that afternoon.
Margaret told Amelia he came to discuss “old family paperwork.” Nathan treated him with polite condescension, offering him a seat away from investors and asking whether retirement on a farm felt peaceful.
Charles answered calmly.
“I keep busy.”
Nathan did not ask how.
Charles had withdrawn from public business after Evelyn died. Newspapers stopped using his photograph. He restored historic buildings, funded libraries anonymously, and allowed Amelia to describe him simply as her stepfather.
The Grant name remained attached to one of the largest private infrastructure trusts in the country.
Charles controlled it.
When Amelia sent the flash-drive archive to family counsel, an emergency clause activated. Any Grant-backed property subject to coerced transfer could be frozen pending investigation.
That included Vale House.
The private drive.
Nathan’s aircraft lease.
Three corporate credit lines.
The lights approaching the mansion belonged to trust attorneys, forensic accountants, independent security staff, and investigators carrying a court preservation order.
Charles watched them arrive.
Nathan looked from the windows to Amelia.
“What did you send?”
“The truth your mother hid.”
Margaret crossed the room.
“Charles, stop this before she destroys everything.”
He turned toward her.
“You knew the apartment transfer would expose the collateral records.”
Margaret’s lips tightened.
“That trust should have ended with Evelyn.”
Charles answered, “It did not.”
The first attorney entered through the dining-room doors.
“Mr. Vale, nobody leaves with documents or electronic devices until the preservation order is served.”
Nathan stared at his father-in-law.
“You cannot control my house.”
May you like
Charles looked at the deed folder the attorney carried.
“This house belongs to Grant Residential Holdings.”
