The Money That Was Keeping Her Alive

Chapter 01 - The Money That Was Keeping Her Alive

Claire Bennett held the medical envelope against her chest while her father blocked the front hallway.

Richard Bennett wore a pale-blue shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows. His face was red from shouting. Behind him stood Claire’s mother, Diane, and her older brother, Mason.

Nobody looked surprised.

That frightened Claire more than the anger.

“The transfer must happen tonight,” Richard said. “Your brother’s company will collapse by morning.”

Claire tightened her arms around the envelope.

“The money is not mine to invest. It is restricted for my surgery.”

Mason looked away.

Claire had been born with a serious congenital heart condition. After years of procedures, doctors had approved a complex operation at Westbridge Cardiac Institute. The protected medical trust created by her late grandmother would pay for the surgery, rehabilitation, and medication.

The authorization papers were inside the envelope.

Her admission date was three weeks away.

Richard stepped closer.

“Two million dollars is sitting in an account while your brother loses everything.”

“It is sitting there because I may die without the treatment.”

Diane whispered, “Claire, don’t say that.”

“It is what the doctors said.”

Richard reached toward the envelope.

Claire moved back.

His hand closed around the collar of her gray sweater near her throat and forced her against the wall. The pressure was brief but unmistakable.

“Give it to me.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

Mason took one step forward.

“Dad—”

Richard turned his head.

“Stay out of this.”

Claire reached into her pocket and raised her phone.

The screen showed an active call.

00:00:00 had already changed to 00:03:18.

Richard froze.

A woman’s voice came through the speaker.

“Claire, this is Naomi Bell with Bennett Medical Trust Emergency Compliance. We have recorded the demand, the physical contact, and the attempted diversion of restricted treatment funds.”

Diane covered her mouth.

Richard released Claire’s sweater.

Naomi continued.

“The medical account is now locked against family withdrawal. Law enforcement and an independent physician are on the way.”

Claire straightened her collar.

Richard stared at the phone.

“You called them before you came here?”

“No,” Claire said. “Grandma did.”

She turned the envelope over.
