The Instruction Inside the Envelope

Chapter 02 - The Instruction Inside the Envelope

Claire opened the envelope on the hallway table while the emergency call remained connected.

The first pages were ordinary medical documents.

Surgical approval.

Hospital admission.

A payment guarantee from Bennett Medical Trust.

The final page was a handwritten letter from Claire’s grandmother, Eleanor Bennett, who had died six years earlier.

My dearest Claire,

If your father asks you to move, borrow, pledge, or “temporarily use” this money for Mason, do not argue about whether the need is real. Call the number printed below. The trust was created because I discovered withdrawals from accounts intended for your childhood treatment.

The problem did not begin with tonight.

Claire read the sentence twice.

Richard stepped toward the table.

Naomi’s voice sharpened through the phone.

“Do not touch the letter.”

He stopped.

Mason stared at his father.

“What withdrawals?”

Richard ignored him.

Diane began crying.

Claire looked at her mother.

“You knew?”

Diane’s silence answered before her words did.

“I knew your father borrowed from one account when you were little. He said he paid it back.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

Richard turned toward Diane.

“Stop talking.”

The emergency operator asked everyone to remain separated.

Claire moved beside the open front door, keeping a clear path outside.

A black sedan entered the driveway, followed by an ambulance and a county investigator’s vehicle.

Richard looked through the glass.

“This family is not a crime scene.”

Claire held the letter.

“It became one when money for my heart kept disappearing.”
