The Trust Eleanor Built

Chapter 03 - The Trust Eleanor Built
Eleanor Bennett created the medical trust after Claire’s third heart procedure at age nine.
The family’s health insurance had limits. Specialist travel, rehabilitation, and experimental monitoring were expensive. Eleanor sold part of her manufacturing company and placed fifteen million dollars into a protected fund.
The trust could pay only for Claire’s medical care, education during recovery, accessible housing, and long-term living expenses if her condition prevented full employment.
Richard served as family liaison.
He never controlled the principal.
Eleanor appointed an independent bank and attorney after noticing inconsistent invoices.
Richard told the family his mother distrusted him because he had chosen business over medicine.
The truth was narrower.
She distrusted his paperwork.
Between Claire’s ninth and fifteenth birthdays, several therapy bills had been inflated. A transportation company billed the trust for trips that never occurred. Equipment purchases were approved under Claire’s name but delivered to Richard’s warehouse.
Eleanor stopped the losses she could identify.
She never proved who prepared every invoice.
Before dying, she added the emergency instruction to Claire’s surgical envelope.

She expected Richard would try again when the trust’s largest payment became available.
He did.
