The Son Who Did Not Ask

Chapter 10 - The Son Who Did Not Ask

Ruth and Michael met privately in the west library.

No lawyers.

No doctors.

No staff.

He apologized for accepting Celeste’s descriptions of her memory.

Ruth did not rescue him from the discomfort.

“You stopped asking me questions.”

“I thought arguing made you anxious.”

“Celeste told you that.”

“Yes.”

“And you preferred her answer.”

Michael looked down.

It was true.

His mother’s questions about company payments, medication, and property required time. Celeste offered summaries that allowed him to return to work.

Convenience had become a form of consent.

Ruth handed him one of Thomas’s letters.

Their father had written:

Michael is a good man who has mistaken speed for responsibility. Make him slow down before someone else uses his signature as a machine.

Michael smiled painfully.

“He knew me.”

“He knew all of us.”

Ruth did not immediately forgive him.

She established conditions.

Her medical information would belong to her.

No family member could enter appointments without invitation.

She would hold her own phone, accounts, keys, and mail.

Michael agreed.

Repair began not with emotion, but with logistics.
