The Clock in the West Library

Chapter 03 - The Clock in the West Library

The west library had been locked since Thomas Ashford died.

Celeste said dust aggravated Ruth’s breathing and persuaded Michael to keep the room closed. He had accepted the explanation because grief made locked doors feel reasonable.

The brass key opened the grandfather clock.

Behind the clock face was a narrow steel drawer.

Inside lay a red ledger, a flash drive, and a letter addressed to Michael.

The handwriting belonged to his father.

Michael,

If Ruth gives you this key, she believes the family is no longer safe inside its own structure.

Do not confuse a diagnosis with truth. Do not confuse marriage with ownership. And do not let anyone use your absence as your consent.

Michael read the final sentence twice.

Celeste remained at the library door.

“This is absurd. Thomas was paranoid near the end.”

Ruth sat in an armchair beside the window.

“He was careful.”

Michael opened the red ledger.

It recorded transfers from the Ashford Foundation into consulting companies owned by Celeste’s brother, Adrian Shaw. Money intended for elder-care clinics had funded a beach property, luxury vehicles, and a political campaign.

The final pages contained signatures authorizing the transfers.

Michael’s signature appeared eleven times.

He had signed none of them.

Celeste stepped forward.

“Your mother kept incomplete copies. Those were legitimate consulting payments.”

Naomi arrived with two forensic accountants and a medical advocate.

She examined the ledger.

“These signatures are mechanical reproductions.”

Michael looked at Celeste.

“You forged my name.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

She glanced toward the floor.

That small movement answered before words could.

The flash drive required a password.

Ruth gave one sentence.

“Your father’s first hotel.”

Michael entered ASHFORDLAKE.

The screen opened to a folder labeled CELESTE — GUARDIANSHIP PLAN.

Inside was a draft petition declaring Ruth unable to manage finances, prone to delusions, and dangerous to herself.

A second petition declared Michael temporarily incapable of corporate decisions due to “chronic travel exhaustion and grief-related dependency.”

Celeste had prepared to control both mother and son.
