Why Ruth Was Holding the Mop

Chapter 05 - Why Ruth Was Holding the Mop

Ruth told the full story that afternoon.

She had entered Michael’s study looking for the blue folder Thomas mentioned in an old letter. The folder contained original property deeds and the trust’s operating instructions.

Celeste found her.

She accused Ruth of stealing private documents.

Ruth tried to leave with the folder. Celeste took it and emptied a bucket across the foyer.

Then she placed the mop in Ruth’s hands.

“She said if I wanted to remain in the house, I should make myself useful.”

Elena heard the argument from the pantry.

When she approached, Celeste ordered her away.

Ruth hid the brass key inside the mop cloth because Celeste searched her pockets.

She then lowered herself to the floor, partly from dizziness and partly to keep the key out of sight.

“I knew Michael was coming,” she said.

Michael looked at Elena.

“You sent the message?”

Elena nodded.

Naomi’s office had provided the household staff with an emergency number after Ruth’s first call. Elena texted a photograph of Celeste holding the mop over Ruth.

Naomi created the false merger emergency to bring Michael home without alerting Celeste.

Michael struggled with anger toward the people who deceived him and gratitude that the deception brought him back.

Ruth touched his hand.

“They did not know whether you would believe me.”

The sentence hurt because it was fair.

Celeste had spent months calling Ruth confused.

Michael had corrected his mother in front of guests, removed her access to accounts, and accepted medical summaries without asking her privately what she wanted.

He had not created the plan.

He had made it easier.
