Four years after the trial, Michael visited Celeste once.
She looked older but retained the posture of someone presenting herself to a room.
They spoke through glass.
She asked about the company.
He told her Grace still led it.
She asked about Ashford House.
“It is a legal center now.”
Her mouth tightened.
“My home became an office.”
“It was never legally yours.”
“I made it beautiful.”
“That contribution was real.”
The answer surprised her.
Michael refused to erase everything she had done well.
He also refused to use it as payment against harm.
Celeste asked whether Ruth had forgiven her.
Michael did not know.
“Have you stopped blaming her?”
Celeste looked away.
That was the answer.
Before leaving, Michael said, “I hope you become honest even if none of us are there to reward it.”
