Elena’s New Position

Chapter 17 - Elena’s New Position

Elena Ruiz had been a housekeeper for sixteen years.

She knew medication schedules, family moods, maintenance failures, and which residents in Ashford clinics had no visitors.

After the case, media outlets called her a hero.

She disliked the word.

“Heroes are thanked,” she said. “Workers need authority.”

Ashford Living appointed her to the resident-safety council with voting power and professional training.

She negotiated protections for domestic and care workers reporting abuse.

Anonymous hotlines were not enough.

Employees needed legal support, wage protection, and independent investigators.

Elena’s first policy was called the Open Door Rule.

No resident could be threatened with housing loss for refusing medication, documents, or family demands.

Ruth signed the policy as a resident advocate, not as an owner.
