Celeste’s Trial

Chapter 13 - Celeste’s Trial
The prosecution began with the foyer video.
Jurors watched Ruth seated on the marble.
They saw the mop.
They heard Celeste threaten to remove her from the house.
Then came the medical files, forged signatures, blue folder, sale agreement, and foundation transfers.
Adrian testified.
Pike testified.
Elena testified about the tea and the emergency message.
Michael testified last.
Celeste’s attorney asked whether he still loved his wife.
Michael paused.
“Yes.”
The answer surprised the courtroom.
“Then you accept that she may have believed Ruth needed care?”
“Belief does not require forging my signature or sedating someone without consent.”
“Your mother can be difficult.”
“Yes.”
“Controlling?”
“Sometimes.”
“Suspicious?”
“Sometimes.”
The attorney smiled.
Michael continued.
“Difficult people still own their bodies, homes, and votes.”
The smile disappeared.
Celeste was convicted of elder abuse through coercion, fraud, conspiracy, medical-record falsification, and attempted theft of trust assets.
Adrian received a separate sentence for financial crimes.
Pike was convicted under his plea.
Celeste received twenty-three years.
At sentencing, she apologized to Michael but called Ruth’s resistance the event that “forced escalation.”
