She and Michael met at a hospital fundraiser. Celeste worked in public relations for a medical charity. She admired Ashford Living’s mission and criticized its outdated facilities.
Michael appreciated her directness.
They married after two years.
Celeste improved public campaigns, raised donations, and expanded the foundation’s visibility.
Then Adrian’s development company failed.
Celeste used foundation money to save him temporarily.
One transfer required another.
When Ruth questioned the accounts, Celeste began treating her as an enemy.
The guardianship scheme developed slowly.
First came the belief that Ruth did not understand modern business.
Then the claim that she was emotionally difficult.
Then the medication.
Then the forged papers.
A series of “temporary solutions” became an organized crime.
Michael reviewed old photographs.
Celeste laughing with Ruth at their wedding.
Celeste helping decorate the first community clinic.
Celeste holding Michael after Thomas died.
Some moments had been real.
That did not make the later choices less real.
