The Maid Beneath the Chandeliers

Chapter 01 - The Maid Beneath the Chandeliers

The Vance Estate had never been built to feel like a home.

It was a declaration made of white marble, gold leaf, crystal, and cold ambition. On the night of the Founders’ Gala, more than three hundred investors filled its grand hall while a string quartet played beneath a chandelier large enough to illuminate a theater.

At the center of the room, Vivian Vance held a sleeping newborn.

Her champagne-colored gown shimmered beneath the lights. Diamonds framed her face. To the guests, she looked like the perfect guardian of an old American dynasty.

The young maid standing before her looked like everything the Vance family preferred not to notice.

Elena Marlowe wore a black uniform with a white collar and apron. Tears ran silently down her cheeks. Both hands remained extended toward the child.

“Please give him back,” she said.

Vivian tightened the white blanket around the baby.

“You entered my family’s private nursery without permission.”

“He is my son.”

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Vivian’s expression sharpened.

“This woman was hired six weeks ago. Tonight, she attempted to carry an infant through the service corridor while investors were arriving.”

“I was taking him away from you.”

“Listen to yourself.”

The child stirred but remained safe in Vivian’s arms.

Elena stepped closer.

Vivian raised her voice so the nearest cameras could hear.

“She has become obsessed with the Vance family. She claims the baby belongs to her and that she is somehow connected to this estate.”

Elena reached beneath her collar and removed a small silver pendant shaped like an ivy leaf.

“My mother gave me this.”

Vivian’s face changed for less than a second.

Then she laughed.

“A trinket does not make you an heiress.”

At the top of the marble staircase, a champagne glass slipped from someone’s hand.

Sebastian Vance stood frozen among the guests.

The silver-haired patriarch had not appeared publicly in nearly a year. He wore a black double-breasted jacket with gold buttons and carried himself with the authority of a man whose name was carved into banks, hospitals, and railway stations.

His eyes were fixed on Elena’s pendant.

Twenty-seven years earlier, he had given its matching half to his only daughter the night she disappeared.

Sebastian descended the staircase.

Vivian turned toward him.

“Father, this employee has caused a scene.”

He walked past her.

Past the baby.

Past the cameras.

Then he stopped in front of the crying maid.

“What was your mother’s name?”

Elena’s voice trembled.

“Isabelle Marlowe.”

Sebastian closed his eyes.

When he opened them, they were wet.

He pulled Elena into his arms.

“My daughter’s name was Isabelle Vance.”

The ballroom fell silent.

Vivian looked down at the infant she was holding.

For the first time that evening, she understood that the child in her arms might be the newest legal heir to everything she planned to sell before midnight.
