Why the Newborn Mattered

Chapter 04 - Why the Newborn Mattered
The Vance Family Trust contained an unusual succession clause.
Sebastian had created it after Isabelle disappeared.
If Isabelle or any legally verified descendant returned, thirty-five percent of the family’s protected property would transfer into an independent branch trust.
The Vance Estate itself could not be sold without that branch’s approval.
Vivian knew the clause existed.
She believed Isabelle had died without children.
Elena’s appearance threatened the sale.
Noah’s birth made the threat permanent.
Under the trust, a second-generation descendant activated preservation rights over the original estate, archive, and public gardens.
Vivian could challenge Elena’s identity.
It was harder to erase both mother and child once medical and legal records existed.
That explained the clinic.
Elena had gone into labor unexpectedly while working at the estate. Vivian insisted she use the Vance Women’s Clinic rather than a public hospital.
Dr. Mercer registered her under a temporary patient number.
Her phone was taken “for safekeeping.”
After the birth, Vivian told Elena that Noah required observation and that she could see him only under supervision.
Elena overheard staff discussing an emergency guardianship petition claiming she was delusional about being a Vance descendant.
She escaped her recovery room and returned to the estate through the service entrance.
The gala provided the only moment when Vivian could not remove her quietly.
“She planned to have me arrested in front of everyone,” Elena said.
Vivian replied, “You stole an infant from a medical facility.”

Elena held Noah closer.
“I took my son from a room where you were preparing papers to make him yours.”
