Chapter 07 - The Maid’s Room
Elena had lived in a small room beneath the east stairs.
Vivian’s staff searched it during the gala.
Naomi and estate security arrived before anything was removed.
Inside the mattress lining, Elena had hidden copies of Isabelle’s letters, a digital recorder, and a brass key bearing the Vance crest.
The recorder contained conversations from the clinic.
Dr. Mercer telling Vivian that Elena remained mentally competent.
Vivian answering:
“Competence is not the conclusion the trust requires.”
Another file captured Caroline refusing to participate.
“I will not let you put my name on someone else’s baby.”
Vivian replied:
“You will sign because this estate is the only inheritance I can still save for you.”
Caroline had left the country that morning.
Her refusal explained why Vivian needed the gala confrontation. Without Caroline’s cooperation, she required an emergency guardianship route instead.
The brass key opened Isabelle’s sealed bedroom.
