Sebastian wanted to recover twenty-seven years immediately.
He offered Elena a wing of the mansion, a car, staff, and a board position.
She declined most of it.
“You cannot repair absence by surrounding me with employees.”
The sentence embarrassed him.
It also taught him.
He began asking smaller questions.
May I visit?
May I hold Noah?
May I tell the press you are my granddaughter?
Sometimes Elena said no.
The relationship survived.
Sebastian learned Noah’s feeding schedule, favorite blanket, and habit of becoming calm near music.
He never again took the baby from Elena’s arms without asking.
