The Daughter Removed from the Family History

Chapter 03 - The Daughter Removed from the Family History

Isabelle Vance had been twenty-two when she disappeared.

Official family biographies said she died in a sailing accident off the coast of Maine. No body was recovered.

Sebastian had accepted the conclusion because the Coast Guard found wreckage from her boat and because his wife, Margaret, was dying at the time. Grief arrived from two directions, leaving him unable to examine either closely.

Elena told another story.

Isabelle survived.

She discovered that Vance Development was purchasing condemned neighborhoods through shell companies and forcing residents out before redevelopment votes. The scheme was managed by Sebastian’s younger son, Edward, and Edward’s fiancée at the time—Vivian Hale.

Isabelle gathered evidence.

Before she could present it, someone sabotaged her boat.

A fisherman rescued her miles from the wreckage. Injured and afraid, she changed her name to Marlowe and disappeared.

“She believed the family would protect the company before it protected her,” Elena said.

Sebastian looked toward Vivian.

“Did you know she survived?”

Vivian answered without hesitation.

“No.”

Elena removed a small photograph from the ivy pendant.

It showed Isabelle holding an infant outside a modest house.

On the back was a date and one sentence.

ELENA, IF THE VANCE ESTATE IS EVER SOLD, GO HOME BEFORE THEY ERASE THE LAST PROOF.

Sebastian’s hand trembled.

“When did Isabelle die?”

“Eight months ago.”

Elena explained that her mother had spent years gathering records but refused to return while Edward controlled the company. After Edward died, Vivian became acting chair and prepared to sell the Vance Estate and its land archive to Meridian Crown Resorts.

The closing was scheduled for midnight.

Elena entered the household staff because every letter to Sebastian had been intercepted.

She found her mother’s old room sealed behind the west gallery.
