James Bennett Takes Responsibility

Chapter 11 - James Bennett Takes Responsibility
Reporters gathered outside Bennett House.
They wanted a simple story.
Loving father discovers evil stepmother.
James refused it.
He issued a statement admitting he failed to protect Lily from emotional harm inside his home.
“I believed explanations that were convenient to me,” he said. “I treated my daughter’s discomfort as adjustment because confronting the truth would have required questioning my marriage.”
The board’s public-relations team advised him to remove the admission.
He refused.
During the company investigation, James disclosed every document he signed without reading, every warning he minimized, and every meeting where Victoria spoke for Lily.
His honesty damaged him.
Several shareholders demanded his resignation.
He stepped down as chief executive pending review.
Bennett Healthcare appointed an independent interim leader.
James retained no special authority through the family name.
Lily asked whether he had lost his job because of her gift.
“No.”
“Because of Victoria?”
“Partly.”
“Then why?”
“Because being responsible means accepting what I failed to do, even when someone else did worse.”
Lily considered this.
“Do you still get birthdays?”
James smiled sadly.
“I hope so.”
She hugged him.
