The Father at the School Door

Chapter 17 - The Father at the School Door
James began arriving early at Lily’s school.
Not with assistants.
Not between calls.
He waited near the main entrance holding her backpack snack and the wrong jacket whenever weather changed.
At first, Lily looked surprised every time.
Then she began expecting him.
Consistency replaced dramatic promises.
One afternoon, a teacher asked James to speak at Career Day.
He declined the executive panel and joined the parent group discussing mistakes.
“What is your job?” a student asked.
James considered the answer.
“I help repair clinics.”
“What did you do before?”
“I ran a company.”
“Why did you stop?”
“Because sometimes leadership means leaving a position when your judgment needs examination.”
The children found that answer less interesting than his story about accidentally breaking a conference-room projector.

Ordinary embarrassment felt healthy.
