The Sister Anna Never Knew

Chapter 04 - The Sister Anna Never Knew

Evelyn Vale had worked as a nurse before marrying Anna’s father, Richard Bennett.

The marriage lasted two years.

During a separation, Evelyn became pregnant by another man and gave birth to Victoria. Richard believed the child was his until a private test proved otherwise.

The divorce records were sealed.

Evelyn surrendered custody of Victoria to relatives and returned to Richard. Years later, she gave birth to Anna.

Anna grew up believing she was an only child.

Victoria grew up knowing a wealthy family had rejected her.

The DNA report in Box 317 came from Anna’s investigation.

Anna discovered the connection after Victoria joined the foundation as a consultant. At first, Anna believed the resemblance between them was coincidence.

Then she found Evelyn’s letters.

Victoria had approached the Bennett family years before meeting James.

She knew Anna was her half-sister.

She knew Lily’s trust descended partly from Richard’s estate.

She never disclosed any of it.

James sat in Sarah’s office after the bank closed.

Lily slept on a sofa beneath his coat.

“She married me because of the trust.”

Sarah answered carefully.

“Possibly. That does not prove every part of the relationship was planned.”

James remembered meeting Victoria at a hospital fundraiser nine months after Anna’s death. She listened while he spoke about grief. She never rushed him. She understood details about Anna he assumed came from foundation research.

Now he knew she had studied a sister who never knew she existed.

Marcus’s role remained unclear.

The DNA report proved he was not Victoria’s full brother. He had been raised in the same household, but they shared only a legal family name.

Sarah opened another file from the flash drive.

Anna had traced Marcus’s consulting companies and found links to Bennett Healthcare vendors. She planned to confront the board the week she died.

Her car left the road during heavy rain.

The police blamed hydroplaning.

James had accepted the report because grief made simple explanations feel merciful.

Now the date on Anna’s final email mattered.
