Anna’s Garden

Chapter 16 - Anna’s Garden
Bennett House was too large for two people and too full of controlled memories.
James sold it.
Part of the estate became a public garden and family-advocacy center. The dining room where Victoria planned the trustee vote became a legal clinic for children caught in inheritance and guardianship disputes.
Lily chose the garden’s name.
Anna’s Open Gate.
Near the entrance stood no statue.
Only a bench beneath a maple tree and a small plaque:
LOVE DOES NOT REQUIRE A CHILD TO ERASE SOMEONE ELSE.
The attic portrait was restored.
Conservators left one section of the loose backing visible, showing where Anna hid the letter.
The crayon drawing remained with Lily.
She refused to place it in the public archive.
“That was my gift to Dad.”
James agreed.
