Box 317

Chapter 03 - Box 317
First Commonwealth Bank closed at six.
James arrived at five forty-three with Lily, attorney Sarah Quinn, and two Bennett Foundation trustees.
Victoria followed in a separate car with her brother, Marcus Vale.
The bank manager refused to allow them into the private-vault corridor.
“The box is registered to Anna Bennett and James Bennett jointly,” he said. “Mrs. Victoria Bennett has no authority.”
Victoria’s face tightened.
“I am his wife.”
“That is not a banking credential.”
Lily held James’s hand as the manager led them downstairs.
Box 317 required the brass key and a second key held by the bank. The lock resisted for one second, then opened.
Inside lay a red ledger, three flash drives, a sealed DNA report, and the original Bennett Children’s Trust.
Sarah examined the trust first.
Anna had created it with shares inherited from her father’s medical-device company. The trust owned forty-two percent of Bennett Healthcare—the company James publicly led.
Lily was the sole beneficiary.
James served as protector.
No spouse, stepparent, or family member could control the shares without a court order based on independent medical evidence.
The version waiting in James’s study was different.
It granted Victoria immediate voting authority if James signed.
His signature had already been placed on two preliminary pages.
It was forged.
Sarah placed the documents side by side.
“Who prepared the amended version?”
James knew the answer before she asked.
Marcus Vale served as Bennett Healthcare’s chief financial officer.
The red ledger documented transfers from the children’s foundation into consulting companies owned by Marcus. Money intended for pediatric clinics had financed luxury apartments, political donations, and a failed hotel development.
The flash drives held emails between Victoria and Marcus.
One message read:
ANNA IS ASKING ABOUT THE CLINIC ACCOUNTS. MOVE EVERYTHING BEFORE JAMES SEES IT.
Another:
IF THE TRUST REMAINS WITH LILY, WE NEVER CONTROL THE BOARD.
James felt Lily’s fingers tighten.
She could not read the screen from where she stood.
He closed the laptop.
The sealed DNA report remained.
Victoria’s name appeared on the cover.
Sarah opened it.
The test compared Victoria, Marcus, and a woman named Evelyn Vale.
Probability of full sibling relationship between Marcus and Victoria: 0.00 percent.
James frowned.
“Who is Evelyn?”
Sarah turned the next page.
Evelyn Vale was Anna Bennett’s mother.
The report showed Victoria was Evelyn’s biological daughter.

Anna and Victoria had been half-sisters.
Victoria had married James knowing she was related to his late wife.
